SyncWatch now supports the IEEE1588 Standard for providing precise timing and synchronisation over packet-based, Ethernet networks.

Lydbrook, Gloucestershire, UK - 15 February 2011 – Chronos Technology today announces the availability of Precision Time Protocol (PTP) measurement and monitoring capability to its SyncWatch platform.
PTP was originally defined in the IEEE 1588-2002 standard, officially entitled "Standard for a Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems". In 2008 a revised standard, IEEE 1588-2008 was released. This new version, also known as PTP version 2, improves accuracy, precision and robustness and is the version that has been adopted by the telecommunications industry as one of the options to solve synchronisation distribution challenges in modern networks.
The PTP capability in SyncWatch now allows telecom equipment manufacturers, network operators and outsourcing companies to use SyncWatch to determine the suitability of a packet network to support 1588/PTP sync as well as proving the resulting frequency performance remains within specification.
The most versatile synchronisation testing and monitoring platform available on the market today, SyncWatch supports both physical and packet layer synchronisation measurements and continues to be used to benchmark equipment or system performance in the lab and during field evaluations. SyncWatch collects, stores and presents synchronisation performance data in customer friendly formats and metrics.
As networks evolve to support packet-based transmission, maintaining accurate synchronisation over the longer term becomes critical. If left unchecked, synchronisation errors can cause a significant loss of data, reduced network capacity and call handover failures or dropped calls in mobile networks. SyncWatch with PTP ensures operators can swiftly identify the root cause of synchronisation issues leading to fast resolution of issues and the optimisation of the infrastructure.
Chris Roberts, Global Business Development Manager with Chronos said: “Once a decision has been taken to deploy new synchronisation technologies in the commercial network, SyncWatch with its Network Monitoring System/Operational Support Systems integration capabilities allows operators to monitor sync performance on an on-going basis against their own internal Service Level Agreements / Key Performance Indicators and international Standards such as MTIE.” He added “The addition of 1588/PTP capability to SyncWatch ensure the platform is able to meet the total needs of organisations operating and maintaining sync in modern telecom networks.”
