Lydbrook, Gloucestershire, UK, 18 October 2011, Chronos Technology is delivering a presentation on Integrated Frequency & Packet Performance Monitoring in the Transition to Packet Networks at ITSF 2011 on 2 November in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The presentation, delivered by timing and sync expert Chris Farrow, will propose novel methods of integration of packet- & physical-layer metrics and measurements into existing management stacks; methods that encompass existing network equipment and TDM/SDH based equipment practices as well as newer 1588 (PTPv2) and ACR clock distribution techniques.
As networks transition to ubiquitous packet delivery of any and all services, sync has moved up the application stack - sync is now a service just like any other. Specific network engineering can ensure that sync-as-a-service can deliver the required performance, but monitoring this performance now involves both the new packet domain and the existing physical-layer domain. To provide meaningful performance indicators of end-to-end sync delivery operators now face the dilemma of how to integrate these two different types of monitoring and metrics into day-to-day network operation and management.
About the speaker: Chris Farrow, BSc (Hons), AMInstP, MIET, Technical Manager
Chris is responsible for all technical services at Chronos including Synchronisation MasterClass Training, Sync Audit and network planning consultancy, customer demonstrations and SyncWatch product development. Chris participates in the ITU Study Group 15 Question 13 (Synchronisation) and regularly presents synchronisation papers at international conferences such as WSTS and ITSF. Chris joined Chronos from Marconi’s UK Technical Assistance Centre in Liverpool in January 2006. During his time at Marconi, Chris gained 17 years’ experience working in all aspects of telecommunications and was responsible for the field trial, rollout and support of enhanced synchronisation products and services within Marconi’s "System X" Switching and SDH/DWDM products.
Chris holds an Honours degree in Physics & Electronics from UMIST – University of Manchester, Institute of Science & Technology.
About Chronos Technology
Chronos provides bespoke technical solutions including time and timing for wireline and wireless telecom operators; highly versatile telecoms sync testing, monitoring systems and quality of service applications; Chronos is a specialist in the field of position, navigation and timing; and interference detection and location. Chronos supply GNSS (GPS) products from receivers for all application types including covert tracking, avionics, and embedded systems to test equipment (simulators) and GNSS infrastructure (antennas, splitters, repeaters) for the distribution of GNSS RF signals into sensitive environments, including military systems. Chronos has developed a range of bespoke GPS timing products for time and frequency synchronisation in power and communication systems and is leading the Technology Strategy Board part-funded SENTINEL programme. Chronos was founded in 1986 by Charles Curry and is ISO 9001 approved. Charles is Chairman and founder of the International Telecom Sync Forum which was established in 2000.
