European Utilities Telecom Council (EUTC)

European Utilities Telecom Council (EUTC)

A net-zero carbon future, end to fuel-poverty, sustainability, security and resilience are some of the major challenges facing utilities in the 2020s, all within strictly regulated industries. The high level global challenges associated with mitigating climate change are driving very demanding obligations within the utility sector. As a result, the sector is going through a paradigm shift in the way that networks are controlled and monitored as their systems migrate towards an integral smart grid.

All stakeholders are expanding and adapting their operational telecoms systems, using all sorts of technologies including wireless technology, and increasingly integrated into their operational processes in a shared network and services environment. This comes with a plethora of requirements and challenges, among others:
– growing and evolving rapidly to deploy massive numbers of devices
– ensuring cyber security and resilience for more digitalised critical infrastructure
– operational flexibility to adapt to changing regulations and market needs

The European Utilities Telecom Council (EUTC) addresses these challenges by bringing industry experts together from across Europe, enabling them to share knowledge and stay up to date in this rapidly changing field. The EUTC works in partnership with the relevant stakeholders that actively seek its opinions in important issues such as spectrum allocation and development of the future energy grid. EUTC plays a significant part in shaping the future of standards development, technology ecosystem and key EU policies in order to allow the utility sector to procure cost effective, robust products and services for OT networks. This is achieved through interaction directly with the utility community, vendor supply chain and regulators at national and EU level.

International Telecommunication Union

ITU is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies. As the global focal point for governments and the private sector, ITU’s role in helping the world communicate spans 3 core sectors: radiocommunication, standardisation and development. Chronos is an associate member of ITU-T Study Group 15, Question 13 – Network Synchronisation and Time Distribution Performance. Network sync performance specifications are essential for successful operation of digital transmission networks including the support of, for example, mobile networks. Network timing performance standards are necessary to define the feasibility and most effective means of implementing a time reference distribution service. This includes the distribution of both precision time and frequency.

The following major Recommendations, in force at the time of approval of this Question, fall under its responsibility:

Definitions and Architecture: G.781, G.810, G.8260, G.8264, G.8265, G.8275
PTP Profiles: G.8265.1, G.8275.1
Network Performance: G.8251, G.822, G.823, G.824, G.825, G.8261, G.8261.1, G.8271, G.8271.1
Clocks: G.811, G.812, G.813, G.8262, G.8263, G.8272, G.8273, G.8273.2
Test equipment: O.171, O.172, O.173, O.174 and O.182

Founded in 2001 by Charles Curry, the conference is organised by Executive Industry Events and features use case and forthcoming requirements in 4G/5G Networks, Smart Grids, Transport, Finance, Data Centres, Broadcast, Defence, IoT and Automotive. It also features the latest in standards and standards roadmaps for using and securing timing, including MiFID II, PTP/1588, SyncE, NTP.

The high quality content is put together by the ITSF Steering Group comprised of international experts in time and sync (including members of the Chronos team) representing equipment manufacturers, operators and in many cases members of relevant Standards bodies.

JOSCAR

JOSCAR

Chronos is a member of JOSCAR, a collaborative tool used by the aerospace, defence and security industry to act as a single repository for pre-qualification and compliance information.

One of the key aims of JOSCAR is to ensure that the information that suppliers and third parties are asked to provide to their clients is proportionate to the types of goods of services being supplied. A dynamic two-stage process is used to ensure that the process is tailored, and therefore as efficient as possible.

Stage 1 collects basic information about a supplier or third party to produce a profile on their legal entity, financial status and the nature of goods and services being supplied. This information allows an inherent risk assessment to be performed to determine if Stage 2 is needed in order to collect more detailed information.

Stage 2 requires the completion of a more detailed questionnaire along with supporting evidence, such as policies and certificates. To make the process as efficient as possible, only questions relevant to the nature of goods and services indicated in Stage 1 are asked, and most of the questions have selectable answers rather than requiring lengthy written responses.

Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC)

Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC)

The Power Networks Demonstration Centre is a venture founded by government, industrial and academic partners with the aim of accelerating the adoption of innovative research and technologies from early stage research into business as usual adoption by the electricity industry. Building the next generation of energy networks requires collaboration and the PNDC connects stakeholders through every stage of the innovation process. The unique facility enables highly realistic and accelerated technology testing alongside a rich portfolio of research programmes across the full Smart Grid domain.

Timing and synchronisation between power plants and sub-stations is a key requirement in today’s Smart Grid. The ability to measure time in increments as small as a nanosecond is vital for efficient monitoring, phasor measurement, sampled values, resiliency and control of power plants and sub-stations to maintain safety and ensure continuity of supply. Chronos is taking an active role in helping to transform the electricity grid to meet the complexities and demands of current and future generation and consumption via our membership of PNDC’s world class facility.
